Under_Score v17.0 Senior CS Teacher Mrs. Shalini Harisukh Interview

Ma’am, how do you think computer science and AI can be used beneficially for realistic communication between individuals of society, especially between teenagers and adolescents these days who spend most of their time online?

AI is a field that is progressing everyday. Today, a few 1s and 0s can make a life like a fully functioning digital person who goes through feelings, just like us humans. These AI personas are highly intelligent and can help so many people, not only in professional fields, but on a personal level. Adolescents go through many changes at their age and are not always comfortable with talking to someone about it. AI can be used to create people who will be able to understand and help their issues.

Use of technology in education – is it a necessity or superfluity?

Since time immemorial education has been the most important element in the development of a person. However we have left out one of the most important aspects of educational development  altogether which is Technology. A few years ago technology was not even considered a part of education but now, after the Covid-19 Pandemic we can understand the meaning of technology in education. Technology truly is necessary in education as you can’t learn something without understanding the true application of it. After all you can’t teach robotics, AI and computers with books, can you? Nor can you show videos or learning materials from the web to the students for their better understanding on the blackboard. That is where Technology comes in

How will you protect students from the harmful elements of the internet?

The Internet has truly proved to be a boon for us. In 1989 when Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web he thought that his creation would become the base of all of our lives. It is not possible to imagine our lives without the internet. However the internet is not only a place for knowledge and learning but also a place of dark things by thieves, criminals, hackers and all sorts of people. Knowing such things we need to protect our students from the dark side of the internet. The only way to do this is to follow strict discipline while using the web. Teaching students simple things such as never trusting stranger on web or taking care of your privacy on the internet can protect the students to certain limits

Since computer science is a male dominated industry, how do you, as a part of the education system, encourage the participation of girls in technology?

It’s not new to see that science fields are male dominated. Computer science or even science as a whole has always seen this trend. Although, in the last few years, there has been a significant increase in the participation of girls and non binary people in the field, we still have a long way to reach a suitable ratio. Computer science is such a vast and progressing industry. Whatever interest you may have, you’ll find a place for yourself here. Coding, designing, speaking. All of your interests can lead to computers. You won’t know what you’re good at till you try it yourself. Some people are hesitant to indulge in this industry due to the male dominance but when it comes to innovating, gender should be the last thing we focus on. Mary Dillon, Ginni Rometty, Jayshree Ullal, Nandini Harinath, Sudha Murty all stand in a male dominated industry yet they shine so bright. Aspire to be like them no matter who’s around you. It’s not new to see that science fields are male dominated. Computer science or even science as a whole has always seen this trend.
