Thoughts on College Admissions.

It’s the time of the year that most people are busy getting their college apps in place, getting transcripts ready, recommendations written, resumes polished. It’s time consuming and probably the most important piece of paperwork you will file as a young adult (taxes come later). So for those of you venturing into the unknown, I wanted to give you some advice, maybe an anecdote or two from someone who has done this before.

First of, I have a only ever applied to schools in the US, Canada and UK. I have zero experience with the college application process for India. Hopefully a few of my friends will chime in and fill that void.

What follows is a quick guide to what I think are some important aspects of this application process.

Major

We all assume , that your college pick is the most important choice. The place, name the brand. But I disagree, i think the most important choice you will make in this process is what major you pick.

I really believe that if you are doing what you are interested in, you will excel at it you will care about it, you will try and make a difference. So pick a major you care about.  This is lnexun so for a lot of you it will pick computer science or engineering.. Just be sure that what you really want to do. Are you willing to be up for four days straight working on a project in this major? Do you care about what you a learning?

College

Even if you can’t pick a major (some of you might not be sure), don’t sweat it. You probably have a field or area you are interested in. You should base your college picks based on your major/field. Not the other way around.

I did what I think makes the most sense, I made a list of about 12 schools i would apply to. You have limited time and want to put maximum effort in all you applications… So be judicial about your choices. It’s pretty easy to pick 12 colleges you would really like to be at – harvard, Princeton, Yale, MIT, Stanford just roll of the tongue. But that not the point of the exercise… This isn’t a quiz to name all the ivy leagues, it’s an exercise in find a set of colleges that will suit you, your interests and, unfortunate but true, increase the odds of you getting into at least a few of them. That means you have to do research, visit the websites, figure out if they offer the classes you might like to take, talk to people who go there.. Find out what its like.

I picked 3-4 schools that i thought would be really awesome to be at.. My dream schools. These are the easiest ones to pick I think. If you are set on being a computer scientist, Stanford, CMU, MIT to name a few are obvious choices. Aim for the highest pedigree of college here.. The best of the best… Don’t get sidelined that your SAT scores are lower than your friends or that you didn’t get a 99.9999% in the boards.. Just go for it.

The next 4 schools are the safe bets. Now safe school doesn’t mean shitty college, it means you are pretty sure you should get in here, and would be perfectly fine going here. Still base these picks on majors not college names. This is your fallback, option C. Always have a backup plan.

The last 4 I think are the hardest to pick, the colleges you would really like to go to but may not be held in the same league as the dream schools. 90% of the time the education at these places is just as good if not better than those 4 dream schools, they just aren’t that well known. One just example of this is for computer engineering is urbana champaign i think. It a really really good school for computer engineering and is often overlooked by people. Picking these schools is where you have to do the most research… Pick wisely.

College Rankings

All college rankings are just wave guides.. Take them as pointers, not a matter of fact. There is are a lot of silly facts that go in determining rankings that aren’t made public.

Application itself.

There are a lot of people that will be applying to the colleges you want to go to. A lot of these people will have better scores or grades than you. You need to stand out, find what you are good at, showcase that. Be honest about it. College screeners aren’t stupid, don’t try and pull fast ones. Make sure you are the one writing the essays, make sure you personally pour over every detail, every comma on that application… This is the first impression they have of you, make sure they see you, not your advisor or the person you asked to write your essay.

One thing is for certain, colleges are looking for human beings, not numbers or data. Not endless lists of extra-curricular activities that mean nothing. They want to know you – as a person, Your passions. What drives you and motivates you? And then they decide if you ideas and ambition aligns with what they want in their student body.

If you ask me what are the exact traits colleges look for in a person, I would have no answer. Personally I didn’t think my scores and grades were anywhere close to good enough to get into half the schools I did, so really I don’t know. Its highly probable that there is no single list of things you can do to guarantee admission into a certain college.

All you can really do is put all your effort into the process.

Time management

This is important. You need to give your self enough time to work on these applications. Don’t wait for an answer from one school before you start working on other apps. Start early, make sure all your paperwork (resume, SOPs, recommendations) will all be ready on time. Start talking to you professors and advisors early. If you are definitely going to be applying to schools outside india, then you have no excuse to be late on this.

In conclusion…

this process is long and sometimes mind numbing, but if you are writing about the things you enjoy and applying to places that excite you, it can be fun.

Leave your questions in the comments, and I’ll try and answer them. Hopefully others will help out. Best of luck for Exun2010 and college applications. And excuse any typos, first draft was written on a glass keyboard.

The secret origin of windows

I thought you guys might enjoy this article – written by Trandy Tower, the product manager for Windows 1.0 and 2.0.

Really had fun reading this, with things like how windows 1.0 was initially developed and by whom (including people like Gabe newell – the founder of Valve), the challenges faced in a brand new industry and how windows almost never shipped.

Few people understand Microsoft better than Tandy Trower, who worked at the company from 1981-2009. Trower was the product manager who ultimately shipped Windows 1.0, an endeavor that some advised him was a path toward a ruined career. Four product managers had already tried and failed to ship Windows before him, and he initially thought that he was being assigned an impossible task. In this follow-up to yesterday’s story on the future of Windows, Trower recounts the inside story of his experience in transforming Windows from vaporware into a product that has left an unmistakable imprint on the world, 25 years after it was first released.

Empowering Users to Map their worlds

Google is launching Google MapMaker for india, which will allow the rest of us to fill in the missing gaps in google’s map info for india.

In countries like India, great maps and comprehensive local data are hard to come by. And traditional mapping approaches are stretched to the limit in such environments, where infrastructure and local businesses are evolving at a furious pace.

This need inspired us in Google India to design and build Google Map Maker, which enables users everywhere over to create rich, deep maps and fresh local data. People can mark their favorite spots in their cities and hometowns, add features such as roads, parks, and buildings, tag small businesses to help users find them, and collaborate to map neighborhoods of interest. This product is motivated by the spirit of information democracy, where people can create information that are moderated and consumed by their peers.

This looks really cool and I’m going to try it out.

Tech Quotient

Last year, Tech Quotient 2006 was organized as an intra-school quiz by Exun. This year, it’s going international.

Before the quizzing season begins in New Delhi, Madras Gin is organizing Tech Quotient, online. The idea is to host a complete quiz online via Skype and allow people to listen to it as a podcast.
The quiz will have 5 participants per episode and 5 rounds in each episode. The winner of each round progresses and one man/woman will eventually be declared the Official Tech Quotient Nerd.
The quiz master will be Gursartaj Singh Nijjar, Chairman of Madras Gin. On the show, he’ll be known by the moniker “Quizmaster G”.

As far as we know, this is World’s first completely online Quiz show. Even if it’s not, it’ll still be fun to organize, participate and hear. Anyone can take part in this quiz. If you’re interested, write an email to techquotient@gmail.com or signup using the form on www.techquotient.com

Spread the word.

Wikipedia might shut down in a few months

It seems that wikipedia doesnt have the funds to pay for bandwidth and maintainence for more than 3-4 months.

“At this point, Wikipedia has the financial ressources to run its servers for about 3 to 4 months. If we do not find additional funding, it is not impossible that Wikipedia might disappear”.
said Florence Devouard, Chairwoman of the Wikimedia foundation at the Lift07 conference. This comes right after the recent $1 million donation collection they did in january.

With the amount of traffic coming to wikipedia i am not amazed that they need atleast $5 million a year just to keep the site running. Wikipedia could set up ads ( though they have a pledge not to put up ads) or maybe bought over by google/yahoo. If google bought youtube for $1.5 billion and how much would wikipedia cost?

Donations anyone?

UPDATE:

Some blogs are reporting that the statment has been taken out of context and that Wikimedia spokesperson Sandy Ordonez has come forward with this statement.

“Ms. Devouard’s comment was taken out of context,” Ordonez claims, although it’s difficult to imagine the context in which “might disappear” could be taken differently. “Wikipedia will not be closing any time soon. Ms. Devouard was simply referring to the ongoing, pressing needs for funds that Wikipedia, like most nonprofit organizations, face. Ms. Devouard was attempting to showcase how, because of our global reach, Wikipedia needs to be much more creative in its fundraising efforts.”

So does that mean the threat is over or could his happen again.

New iMacs here already !!!

Yes, there has had been speculation that apple would launch a new 23″ iMac on 12th September, when it will hold a special event. But whoa! They are already here …. Meet the iMac family , and it goes al the way up to 24″, Not to mention it has Core 2 duo on the inside now.

Now these new Mac are nice, screaming fast and beautiful but is there some underlying strategy, an ulterior motive ?

It just seems to me that apple is now going full steam at the media centre market. If you can buy a 24″ computer that works out of the box and then just plonk it in your dorm room, instant computer/TV/media centre.

Now, for the more speculative part. If apple has a special event coming up just next week, then why coudnt this announcement wait. Does it mean that the new announcements are going to be so big that Mr. Jobs feels the new iMac, a 24″ one at that, is less important. Apple has even upgraded all its mac mini’s without a word.

A a good friend, I’ll leave you drooling over what’s next: here’s the invitation card sent to the media, for the special event on September 12th.

Virtualization is here …..

Unfortunately for a price .

Parallels Desktop for Mac is the first solution that gives Apple users the ability to run Windows, Linux or any other operating system and their critical applications at the same time as Mac OS X on any Intel-powered iMac, Mac Mini, MacBook or MacBook Pro.
Unlike past software that allowed Windows programs to run on a Mac, Parallels Desktop does not need to emulate the hardware that’s inside a PC. That’s because Macs and PCs now use the same Intel-based chips. As a result, the speed of Parallels is far better than past efforts at bringing together the two operating systems, the software start-up said.

Unlike dual-boot solutions, in which users must completely shut down Mac OS X and endure a full OS start-up cycle to access a important application, Parallels Desktop for Mac empowers users with the ability to run important Windows programs like Outlook, Access, Internet Explorer and all other applications without having to give up the usability and functionality of their Mac OS X machine even for a few minutes.
You can use any version of Windows (3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, Me, 2000, NT, XP, 2003), any Linux distribution, FreeBSD, Solaris, OS/2, eComStation, or MS-DOS in secure virtual machines running alongside – not instead of – Mac OS X.
Using the Parallels Shared Folders you can even easily share documents and folders, or cut and paste data, between any Windows XP, 2003 or 2000 virtual machine and your Mac OS X machine.”

The apple site now actually mentions parallels instead of bootcamp. I believe there is a 15 day free trail ( yes , this has to be paid for ) , so everyone out there with an intel mac please do try this out and tell us.
According to parallels , their software runs as smoothly as bootcamp , but i doubt it .

This is actually the same technology ( or something like this ) that apple promises to incorporate into OS X 10.5 leopard (the next version ) .
