Wikipedia might shut down in a few months

It seems that wikipedia doesnt have the funds to pay for bandwidth and maintainence for more than 3-4 months.

“At this point, Wikipedia has the financial ressources to run its servers for about 3 to 4 months. If we do not find additional funding, it is not impossible that Wikipedia might disappear”.
said Florence Devouard, Chairwoman of the Wikimedia foundation at the Lift07 conference. This comes right after the recent $1 million donation collection they did in january.

With the amount of traffic coming to wikipedia i am not amazed that they need atleast $5 million a year just to keep the site running. Wikipedia could set up ads ( though they have a pledge not to put up ads) or maybe bought over by google/yahoo. If google bought youtube for $1.5 billion and how much would wikipedia cost?

Donations anyone?

UPDATE:

Some blogs are reporting that the statment has been taken out of context and that Wikimedia spokesperson Sandy Ordonez has come forward with this statement.

“Ms. Devouard’s comment was taken out of context,” Ordonez claims, although it’s difficult to imagine the context in which “might disappear” could be taken differently. “Wikipedia will not be closing any time soon. Ms. Devouard was simply referring to the ongoing, pressing needs for funds that Wikipedia, like most nonprofit organizations, face. Ms. Devouard was attempting to showcase how, because of our global reach, Wikipedia needs to be much more creative in its fundraising efforts.”

So does that mean the threat is over or could his happen again.

First ever HD DVD-R notebook by Toshiba

Toshiba is going to release the first laptop which will be able to burn HD DVD-R‘s this February end in Japan. Many of Toshiba’s previous models already have an HD DVD reader.

This notebook (G30/97A) will be sporting an Intel 2 Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, a 320 GB hard disk, a TV Tuner card and a 17-inch widescreen display (16:9 aspect ratio). It also has an HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) output. It will run the new operating system, Windows Vista Home Premium. But, it weighs 4.8 kg. A bit heavy?

To coincide with Toshiba’s launch, Hitachi Maxell will also begin selling HD DVD-R media. A single layer HD DVD-R can store 15GB of data and will be available soon for around $10-$12.

A little bit of math – Answer

I was quite amazed by how many people got it. I spent half and hour on it, and when I finally got it, I felt like banging my head against the wall!

The trick to answering it is to read each letter aloud from left to right.

1
1 1
2 1
1 2 1 1
1 1 1 2 2 1

One
One One
Two One
One Two One One
One One One Two Two One

Still stumped?

One
One One
Two One
One Two, One One
One One, One Two, Two One.

For those fused tubelights that still haven’t got it – each line describes the previous line.

So, the next line would be

Three One, Two Two, One One
3 1 2 2 1 1

And after that

One Three, One One, Two Two, Two One
1 3 1 1 2 2 2 1

and so on.

Here’s a link to the complete GLAT. It’s quite an interesting read, with questions such as “This space is intentionally left blank. Please fill it with something to improve upon the emptiness.”
