Fedora Core 4 : Available

After miserably failing to installed FC3 on my 1997 computer (10GB Harddisk, 64MB RAM, 600MHz Intel Celeron (Coppermine)) I was finally able to install it on my Laptop, with 1.5 GHz Pentium M (Centrino), 40GB Harddisk, 512MB RAM, DVD-CDRW, (and all other Wireless specifications…).

FC3 took just under 30 min to install. I partioned by 40 GB Harddisk to 32GB for XP, 6GB for FC3 and remaining 2GB for a Shared FAT32 Drive (Cause NTFS Support in linux is still in experimental stage and I don’t want to mess up my XP).

This time my laptop touchpad (As it is PS/2) was working unlike my serial mouse on 1997 Computer and I did install the linux in Graphical Mode. Initially I tried to parition my harddisk using Disk Druid only, but it fails. It cannot resize my XP as NTFS is not supported. I tried to use ‘parted’ but it also fails. So I had to use Partition Magic. I downloaded Partition Magic, 87MB from Limewire, but it turned out to be German Edition! I somehow (using german dictionary) translated it and partitioned my harddisk.

Anaconda (FC Installer), Although did give me error when i selected automatic partition option, even though i had created 6GB free space on my harddisk. Eventually I had to manually partition it. It is recommended by the author’s of the linux kernel 2.6.x that a SWAP Partition must be created which should be twice the size of your RAM (If you have 512MB RAM, then size of SWAP partition must be 1024MB), I didn’t create one! It did install without any error even though i didn’t create a SWAP Parrition. I created only a ‘/BOOT’ partition of 110MB, where the boot record and boot files go, and ‘/’ Partition of 7GB (Workstation Installation), where FC3 files go.

FC3 as I told before, is very nice. It comes with all the utilities and program that a common user will need. But as they say “Linux is for a Genius, By a Genius”, is not recommended for normal users. I created a 2GB FAT32 Partition for sharing files between XP and FC3. I expected it to show up as soon as I login, but Alas! I had to mount using ‘mount -t vfat /dev/hda5 /mnt/SHARED’ command and had to edit the /etc/fstab to mount Shared drive every time I login. Although Debian is recommended for user who have shifted to linux, But i would prefer FC4 as softwares bundles provided with debian are old and it take years to release a new version of debian.

After installing on my laptop, I once again tried to install on my computer, after quadchecking the boot partitions and other settings. Result – It did install this time, but didn’t run. I realised that problem is not after all with Anaconda, the problem is with GRUB (GRand Unified BootLoader). The boot loader display the message – “Loading Stage 2”, it fails and system halts. I checked the various bug tracking websites and found that indeed there is a problem with GRUB. It fails on old machine. Anyway i am planning to install Win98 on it, the only OS in the world which could somehow run on my computer.

Overall FC3 is very good, and once you will start working on it, you will simply like it. Fedora Core 4 Is now available for download from fedora.redhat.com,(Use mirror site, something is wrong with their main server, approx 2.5GB). I have not installed FC4 as yet, but according to some forums, FC4 do have a Read/Write support for NTFS. Almost 99% of the people have given thumbs up to FC4. I also hope that they solve the GRUB Problem and do provide other boot loader like LILO with Anaconda.

FC4 is available not only for x86 (32 and 64 bit) but is also available for PowerPC 32bit and also 64bit. So all those people who have macs can install FC4.

Skype

I just came to know about a software called SKYPE, which can be downloaded free of cost from www.skype.com. It allows you to talk to anybody round the globe free of cost(that is except the internet cost, of course)….!
You just need to have a microphone or something similar at both terminals and the software…and probably dsl to make it faster…
It’s clarity is better than any of the messenger services we have..
Try it out, it’s amazing. Add a webcam and you could have an online conference…
Happy chatting!!

Apple Chumming with Intel

In a move to totally remove the PowerPC Processors manufactured by IBM from its product lines, Apple officially declared at around 11 PM IST(June 6th) that they have been secretly managing a programme which maintained OS X on the x86 platform. Apple Plans to start its migration to Pentiums by next year and achieve full migration by 2007-mid. Steve Jobs showed an implementation of Tiger on a Pentium 4 based machine. Developer Kits having a 3.64 GHz P4 CPU will be available for Premium Developers soon.

A technology named Rosetta on the Future Macs will enable them to run both the Fat Binaries and the PowerPC compiled codes with little performance differences. Steve Jobs showed Photoshop for Mac working seamlessly on the P4 machine using Rosetta. To curb concerns over difficulty of porting software from PowerPC to x86, Steve Jobs took the example of Mathematica where he claimed that the whole package took only 2 hours to port using a new version of XCode. This new version of XCode allows compilation in Fat Binaries.

The Crowd according to participants present during the Keynote gave a mixed respose to this shift. Many analysts are predicting that Apple will lose more partners after this shift. Apple has often been vocal about its complaints on IBM because of slow progress and supply constarints on the G5. The Portable Computer Line still runs on G4 processors manufactured by Freescale(Subsidary of Motorola) .

If music be the food of love?

Healthy eating school pupils in Glasgow are to be rewarded with iPods and Xbox consoles for ditching junk food.
Apple iPod

Glasgow City Council is offering the electronic incentives to about 30,000 children in 29 secondary schools.

The pupils are given swipecards and can claim various prizes depending on the number of points they gain for eating “sensibly” on school premises.

A council spokeswoman said youngsters “wouldn’t turn up their noses at winning an iPod for eating nice food”.

They can redeem their points for a selection of goods – from cinema tickets and book tokens to top-of-the-range iPods and Xbox games consoles – at the end of the term.

The council spokeswoman said the scheme, which involves pupils signing up on a voluntary basis, encouraged them to stay within school boundaries at breaks and lunchtimes.

“It means there will be less temptation to go to the chip shop or McDonald’s,” she said.

“There are a variety of healthy choices on the menu and most pupils wouldn’t turn up their noses at winning an iPod for eating nice food.”

It would take 100 meals worth 40 points to reach the 4,000 points required for an iPod.
“The most popular thing on the menu is a Vital Mix, which includes soup, a filled pitta, yoghurt and healthy drink like milk, so it’s not a case of just lettuce leaves and water,” the spokeswoman went on.
“The reward for the Vital Mix, which costs £1.15, is 40 points, so it would take just 100 of these to get an iPod.

Pupils are being rewarded with Xbox consoles
“The swipecard has the pupil’s photo on it and the dinner ladies who swipe them obviously know who is who.”
The scheme was piloted in three schools in Glasgow at the beginning of last year and is now operating in all of the city’s secondary schools.
It will cost the council £40,000 a year – but the local authority said it was a small price to pay if it encouraged children to eat better food which would have a lasting effect on their health.
We would prefer to incentify the scheme rather than be seen as people who ban things
Steven Purcell Glasgow City Council
Steven Purcell, the council’s education convener and chairman of the health and diet working group, said he hoped children would be drawn to the scheme.
“We would prefer to incentify the scheme rather than be seen as people who ban things,” he said.
“I think we have to recognise that with all the advertising that goes on in schools the habits from early in life around young people the challenge is actually quite hard for us.”
And he added: “We have an appalling health record in Glasgow and we need to try anything that will turn that around and make a lasting difference.”

Fedora Core 3

Like Mr. Karan Misra said, Unix can go and bury itself in sand.
Fedora core is an open source project sponsored by red hat, but not supported by it.

It comes in a 4 CD Pack + 1 Rescue CD.
Fedora can be configured to run as Personal Computer OS, Server, Workstation or Mixed. It has very good looking interface. It also has varity of software bundled with it including a WinXP like CD/DVD Writing wizard, games etc, development tools, various services like httpd, windows networking, c and perl compilers and lots more (It comes in 4 CD pack, what do you expect?). You will just love it.

But, It does have a problem with Anaconda (Installer of Fedora Core system), I have
a 1997 Computer with Celeron (coppermine) 600 Mhz , 64 MB RAM (Yes its historic) and 10GB Harddisk (I Know….No need to repeat), serial mouse, standard keyboard.
I tried to install fedora on it. Result – 6 Hrs wasted, crashed my hard disk.

First of all, If you have a serial mouse and try to install in graphic mode, Your mouse will not work. It is a bug in the installer. So, you have to install it in
text mode.

Second of all, If you just go on clicking next..next..next, you will end up having lots of errors, very bad partition, crashed harddisk.

Third of all, if you have a low memory (64 MB RAM) and you don’t create a SWAP
partition, you end up having your installer crashed.

Finally, It doesn’t give error when it needs to. I didn’t notice during installation that i have forgotted to create ‘/boot’ partition. Result after 2 hrs of installation and rebooting ->

Boot record from CDROM…Not Found
Boot record from Floppy…Not Found
Boot record from IDE-0…OK
Missing Operation System.
(System Halted)

Don’t Mistake, The problem is with the installer and not the Fedora Core Itself. The
installation will go smooth if you have PS/2 Mouse and lots of RAM. I installed it
on our school’s computer and it worked very well without any single error. It just that the installer don’t like old machines. Overall I will give 8/10.
