As a teacher who has watched students take on these responsibilities, what changes do you see in them when they’re accountable for an event with real stakes, and how do you decide when to step in and when to let them figure it out on their own?
Over the years, I have seen a gradual change in the nature of responsibilities handled by students. Earlier, these used to be restricted to department-specific work like Design, Quizzing, Sudocrypt, etc., but today, students handle almost everything – from sponsorship and administrative work to printing and even ushering.
This has broadened the way students work and handle responsibility. As their horizons widen, they learn not only about the world, but also about themselves – their strengths, limitations, and ability to take ownership.
As a teacher, it also teaches us when to step back and let them figure things out – when to fail, learn from their mistakes, and grow – and when to step in and guide them. As the saying goes, “Teachers can open the door, but you must walk through it yourself.”
